The Current State of Halston


Ryan Murphy-produced Halston on Netflix gave us a glimpse of the designer’s humble beginnings, exuberant lifestyle, rollercoaster love life, and iconic muses. Halston paved the way for American luxury design, gaining recognition primarily through the notable moment of Jacqueline Kennedy and the pillbox hat. He was always looking for a way to expand his brand and with the help of many who had faith in his creativity, he did. Unfortunately, the glam and fame soon burned out and in the last moments of Halston’s life, his brand was no longer his own.

We loved every minute of the series, but what is the current state of the Halston brand today?

Creative Director

Following Halston’s death in 1990, the label has been juggled around many times by a few celebrities you wouldn’t expect. Harvey Weinstein and co-founder of Jimmy Choo Tamara Mellon bought Halston from James J. Ammeen, owner of Neema Clothing Ltd. in 2007. Weinstein wanted to revive Halston and called upon Mellon to help with brand management and design. Sarah Jessica Parker, Rachel Zoe, Marios Schwab, and Italian fashion designer Marco Zanini were also part of the team, but the partnerships didn’t last long as all left within the span of four years. Following everyone’s departure, Halston was solely owned by private equity firm Hilco Consumer Capital.

Marie Mazelis, former creative director of Herve Leger and Max Azria, was appointed creative director in 2011 and served for the past seven years. Robert Rodriguez joined in 2020 and signed a licensing deal with Groupe JS International to create sportswear and dresses under the Halston label worldwide. Rodriguez graduated from Fashion Institute of Technology, was an assistant fashion designer at Christian Dior New York in 1990, and started his own eponymous label in 2003. He is currently the brand’s creative director.

Design and Presence

Modernity, minimalism, and interchangeability describe recent collections, and we believe Halston would be pleased to see that those elements are alive and well. While Halston remains under the radar with its releases and no longer hosts runway shows, the brand remains present on Instagram, Facebook, and their website, especially now with the Netflix show causing a buzz.

The Future of Halston

Halston was released right on time. Minimalism and trends from the 70s never go out of style, and with the gradual return back to normalcy after a dreadful pandemic, people are ready to get out – in style, of course. While the brand seems to have been on the back burner since the death of Halston himself, Murphy reminded us of the genius that the designer effortlessly attained and that the brand is definitely still alive. And the collections are reasonably priced ranging from $195.00 to $795.00. With that being said, we’ll be in our Halston ready-to-wear at the next social gathering.
