BIG RAPIDS, MI — Another recreational marijuana dispensary has opened in Big Rapids, this one featuring vintage clothing for sale and a seating area where patrons can listen to bands with ties to cannabis.

Skymint Big Rapids near the Ferris State University campus at 840 Clark St. opened Thursday, June 17, to adult-use marijuana customers.

The new location is the 10th licensed recreational dispensary in Big Rapids, and Skymint’s 13th in Michigan.

“Skymint Big Rapids represents the culmination of our promise to create a vibe-enhanced retail experience that brings consumers into our world and inspires them to want to stay and explore,” said Summer Ransom-Cleveland, Skymint’s president of retail.

“Skymint doesn’t just sell the best cannabis Michigan has to offer; we sell and curate a lifestyle that elevates the way people think and talk about cannabis. Beginning in Fall 2021, we look forward to hosting in-store community events that bring together the worlds of cannabis, fashion, food and music.”

Skymint Big Rapids features more than 60 brands of cannabis products, including the Grammy-winning rap artist Lil Wayne’s GKUA brand flower. The store features marijuana flower, pre-rolled joints, edibles, concentrates, vapes, infusions and CBD products.

One-eighth of an ounce of marijuana flower is billed at about $25 to $60 depending on the strain. Through June 26, patrons can receive 30% off most THC products in celebration of the store’s opening.

But more than cannabis offerings, the Big Rapids dispensary also features vintage apparel to peruse and purchase and an area where people can sit and listen to vinyl records of bands with “historical ties to cannabis,” the company says.

“At SKYMINT, we believe strongly that cannabis helps to change the world, helps to improve lives, and ultimately is part of a rising tide that lifts all boats,” said Jeff Radway, CEO of Skymint Brands. “We are currently almost 500 employees strong in Michigan, we’ve invested almost $100 million dollars in the state, and most importantly, we’ve invested in the local communities.

“We are thrilled to be a part of Big Rapids and thrilled to be a part of Mecosta County. We are going to be excellent long-term neighbors and supporters of this community.”

Skymint has recreational dispensaries in Ann Arbor, Bay City, East Lansing, Flint, Hazel Park, Nunica, Portage, White Cloud and two in Lansing. The company also has a medical marijuana provisioning center in Newaygo.

“I think that is pretty clear from what has just been said that the level of investment in the community is significant and going to grow,” said Big Rapids Mayor Mark Warba. “We are happy to welcome a company that is not only willing to make that investment in fiscal matters — but in human capital and the community.

“I like what (Jeff) said about believing that the product is going to be world-changing.”

Throughout June, designated as Pride Month to celebrate and recognize the contributions of the LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer) community, customers can take selfies against in-store Pride backdrops and post them to social media with the hashtag #skymintpride.

For every selfie posted, Skymint will donate $2 to Fair and Equal Michigan. Fair and Equal Michigan is a campaign to protect LGBTQ Michiganders from to discrimination by amending the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to include “gender identity” and “sexual orientation” to the list of protected classes.
