Mental health service Unlock Your You acquires charity status

If you find yourself in a mental health crisis, immediate face-to-face support is available to you — no questions asked.

Unlock Your You, a national mental health service working closely with areas like Newark, has just acquired its charity status.

The service offers support for people in crisis, in that those trained in mental health first aid will come to your need in person — something no other charity provides.

Colby-Christopher Williams, of Newark, is a senior team member at Unlock Your You and has been key in getting the service where it is today.

“Since launching the 0800 support line last June, the service has evolved and we never thought we would be helping such a diverse community of people in such a short space of time,” said Colby-Christopher.

“The whole year has flown by and we’ve done a lot to support each person. We’ve helped or saved at least 150 lives in less than 365 days — across all different walks of life.”

Talks are ongoing to implement a mental health response unit in Newark as a hub for help and advice, which are already set up Grantham and Melton Mowbray.

He said: “Gaining our charity commission licence is so important because it opens huge doors in terms of funding and helps to bridge the gap between no support and clinical support.”

Unlock Your You delivers a pathway where people can gain qualifications to help others going through a crisis, growing their awareness of their community by responding to calls for help.

“Many people who have come to us in a mental health struggle have built themselves up to actually become responders themselves,” said Colby-Christopher.

“A team member trained in mental health first aid will be available to respond to anyone calling the helpline and needing immediate face-to-face support. There will always be two responders per call for safeguarding reasons.

“We turn up to the situation and offer the support that person needs, which isn’t always professional, sometimes it’s just a chat.

“However, we need more people to come forward who want to help the people struggling in their community, that’s how we will be able to open the response unit in town.

“Newark already has a community-spirited vibe, but the more people awake to mental health awareness, the more it will amplify throughout the town.”

The charity is ensuring support is also available at both of Newark’s train stations. If someone is going through a crisis there, a team member will be called to attend. This has also been set up at Grantham and Melton train stations.
