Prince William’s aides began ‘planting stories’ about his brother’s mental health after Harry admitted the pair were ‘on different paths’, it has been claimed.

New revelations about the princes’ relationship are set to come to light in a new documentary which airs on ITV tonight.

In the film, Prince Harry’s biographer, Omid Scobie, alleges the briefing campaign deepened the rift between the pair.

Mr Scobie said it was ‘no coincidence’ stories started appearing about Harry after the duke’s appearance on ITV news, in which he told presenter Tom Bradby about his struggles.

Harry and Meghan were in South Africa on a royal tour at the time of the interview and it was the first time they’d spoke openly about how they were feeling.

Meghan told Mr Bradby she felt she was ‘surviving, not thriving’ and ‘not many’ people had asked her if she was ok.

Harry confirmed the brothers had drifted apart, saying: ‘We are certainly on different paths at the moment but I will always be there for him as I know he will always be there for me.

‘We don’t see each other as much as we used to but I love him dearly and the majority of stuff is created out of nothing. As brothers, you have good days, you have bad days.’

After the clip aired, stories started appearing in the news about William’s worries over his brother’s state of mind.

Mr Scobie says this ‘did not go unnoticed’ and sowed the seeds for what was to become a major rift between the brothers.

However the Finding Freedom author, who is known to be a champion of Harry and Meghan, did not offer any evidence the stories had been briefed by William’s staff.

He said: ‘I would say that it was no coincidence that it was shortly after that aired, even the next day, there were source quotes that came from a senior aide at Kensington Palace saying that William was worried about his brother’s mental health.

‘That fed off such an ugly thing for Harry and it did not go unnoticed. Now whether William directed that or not, no one will ever know, but it came from his household that he is the boss of.’

ITV’s documentary, titled Harry & William: What Went Wrong?, examines how the brothers, who used to be best friends, fell out over Harry’s decision to quit royal life and move to the US.

It comes in the week where the pair were reunited for the first time since Prince Philip’s funeral as they unveiled a new statue to their late mother Diana.

The programme advertises itself as ‘an attempt to get to the bottom of this Royal rift’ which has made headlines around the world.

It sets out to ‘explore allegations that many of the negative stories about Harry and Meghan were the result of briefings from within the Palace’.

Mr Scobie says that Meghan clashed with the royal establishment early on after marrying Prince Harry.

‘Meghan came in driven and ready to work and that immediately ruffled feathers’, he said.

‘She’s a woman well into her 30s: I think she’s proven to herself and the people she’s worked with up until that point that she knows what she’s doing.’

Another royal watcher, Robert Lacey, who wrote the book Battle Of Brothers about William and Harry’s relationship breakdown, also appears in the documentary.

He alleges: ‘Someone close to William told me William felt from an early stage that Meghan had an agenda.’
